Why Leadership Training Programs Are a Waste of Time and Money

Leadership training programs are absolutely everywhere. Companies spend a bunch of money on them with the hope of creating great leaders for the future. But ya wanna know what? Many of these programs don't work. At all.  Why?  Because the real problem isn’t the training itself but the lack of support from the current leaders in the company.

Think about spending thousands of dollars on an awesome training program, only to see your newly trained leaders come back to a place that doesn’t help them grow. This happens a lot. The training isn’t the issue; it’s the fact that existing leaders don’t create an environment where these new skills can be used and appreciated.

Leadership development can't happen in a vacuum. It needs a supportive environment where new leaders feel empowered to use what they’ve learned. When current leaders are uninterested or resistant to change, it creates a negative atmosphere. They might say they support development, but they don’t show it through their actions.

Without the backing of current leaders, training programs are just empty exercises. New leaders might be excited and ready to try new ideas, but they quickly get frustrated when they meet resistance or indifference. If what they learn in training doesn’t match what happens at work, the training becomes useless.

To really make the most of leadership training programs, organizations need commitment from the top. Senior leaders must actively join in these programs, showing how important they are by their actions. They should mentor new leaders, giving them advice and feedback that matches the training. By creating a culture that values learning and growth, organizations can make sure their investment in leadership training actually pays off.

As I wrap up, leadership training programs aren’t a waste of time and money by themselves. They fail because current leaders don’t give the support needed to make these programs work. Real change needs a shift in company culture, led by top leaders. They need to create a place where new leaders can thrive and push the company forward. Without this support, even the best training programs won’t succeed.

I agree with you on leadership training in a company is for nothing. . we often always go to leadership training in these big companies and I never got anywhere with them. the training was for nothing... I am speaking from experience and i could name the company but I wont, but it was a fortune 500 . The only exception that I found that Leadership training really worked was The USA MILITARY.. When I got WLC ( warrior leaders Course) in the Army. Leadership Army training was needed. I took that training and I became a great leader for my troops. they seem to have it right. they train as you rank up. the training begins when you…

I agree that the military does it right! And the reason it is done right is because all ranks support and understand the need for the training, top to bottom. In the corporate world, it is always a concept that "they" need training and never "I" or "we" need training. A whole different world! Thanks for your comment!
